I preface this post by saying that i do not like to post about catches normally because i do not know how to post pics to go with my claims so i hope no one will assume that im just feeding everyone a bunch of bs since i dont have pics posted to back up my catch claims.....i figured this little report may be useful to those looking to get out and grab a few early season trout.

I went to walden pond today, tues april 12th, around 1 p.m. with my cousin. We begin by walking around to the right until we got to the second cove...the one by the railroad tracks. We set up in that area for about 90 mins without so much as a single take. we did not even see any fish rising and a couple others fishing in that area had caught nothing.

We then decided to walk back over by the boat ramp and get set up on the wall (for those of you familiar with walden you know the wall i am speaking of and for those of you not familiar you will realize what wall im talking about as soon as you get down by the boat ramp). We each fished 2 rods. We caught a total of 8 trout (6 caught and released, 2 given to others because they were in rough shape from swallowing the hook) from about 3pm-5pm. All rainbows, all decent sized. One was a 15 1/2 in and a couple others were right at 14 in give or take a 1/2 in. We also saw a gentlemen down further on the wall with a giant one that he says was 18 in (i didnt measure his trout but 18 in sounded about right to me looking at this giant and noting it was larger than the 15 1/2 we got). We caught them all on a combination of power baits. The chartreuse power bait seemed to work best. The fl yellow power eggs also worked though it was clearly not drawing the number of hits the chart. pb was. we also used pink pb which seemed to be the least effective of the three although we didnt stick with that one for long. It seemed that they were hitting all over that wall and casting distance was not that important. Between us and the others fishing that area ( about 8 or 9 others) it seemed that whether casting 30 or 40 yds or simply getting it out there 20 yds or so didnt make a difference. Also the trout were hitting on a high visibility yellow spiderwire with no leader....just a snelled hook with a few inches of mono. I normally use a leader when fishing for trout but after seeing how readily they were hitting i assumed i could get away with not tying one on and i was correct.

Im assuming that even though walden was stocked last wk the fish have quite obviously not spread out. away from the boat launch/long wall area no one was having luck but on the wall any nitwit with a glob of pb and some line and hook could pull out 14 in rainbows. I know this is like shooting fish in a barrel and it's not exactly the most sporting trout fishing ive ever done. However, it is a good chance to get warmed up and test out some new gear. I gave some of my new trout gear a little workout. A good opportunity to teach a kid how to get his first trout also. I dont know how long they will be bunched up there by the ramp hitting everything in sight all day but get down there if you get a chance. You will catch a few....take it to the bank. Take care all.
