Went out in the kayak from about 1:30 to 4 pm this afternoon. Tried out a new soft bait today, Skippyfish 4" Alewife Shad. Got nothing in the little bay by Sandy Beach, but it was really windy, so I sought shelter in the bay near the Winchester Boat Club. Things picked up here. I caught about a 14" largemouth off a dock to kick it off, then another small bass and a yellow perch. Moved on a little and picked up a bunch of bass (five, with three casts in a row to roughly the same spot each yielding a bass, mostly small but one 12"). Had another on after that that shook off. Then I moved around to the other side of the Boat Club and threw Skippyfish along the shore and hooked into a nice ~19-incher to finish a great day. I'm now a believer in Upper Mystic--I've always heard stories of people catching bass there, but never had much luck. I also love the Skippyfish...
I snapped what pictures I could with my cell phone in the kayak, but they didn't really come out so well...
The ranking score is used to determine how "popular" a trip or location is. It is calculated based off of a weighted average of the number of reviews and the user ratings. For example, a trip with 2 reviews and an average rating of 5 will have a lower "ranking score" than one with 10 reviews and an average rating of 4. This is because even though the first trip has a better average rating, it has not been reviewed as much as the second trip, so it is not as "popular". In the future we may modify the ranking score to take in additional factors, such as the number of views, comments, and photos.
Another shot of the big one This guy was a fight to get in, since he got caught up in a big mass of nasty, decaying algae. I pulled the kayak over and let him tire out a bit, then grabbed the line on the side of the algae and pulled him in by hand. 07/11/09 07:04 PM
