Was out this morning & tried a jerk bait since it is getting cold. Never caught anything with them. But, today first cast a nice 3 lber & lost a small one too. Noticed that my rapala husky jerk was not suspending? I was using mono & bait would float up ever so slowly?

Any tips or suggestions?

i tried to use a rapala countdown (or what i thought was a countdown, turns out wen i looked at the box it said suspending) but i used it with floro and it still floated. i was kinda pissed. im returning it.

Did it say suspending?
Some may rise slooow.

Try lucky craft,megabass or spro.

I like the spro Mcrips

Another option is add a larger hook or suspend dots.
this will add weight to lure. But you need to play until suspends the way you like.

Yes it did. Its still caught a nice bass. But, suspending lure & it still floats? Maybe, I'll try another brand?

I did not realize this. But i just read the mcrip and says suspends in cold water. Good info!

Husky's are kind of light compared to some of the new JBs. Mono floats so my guess is the lbs test was over powering the lure and in the lower temp the line could be pull up the lure per say.

I toss mine on 10 lbs fireline and it suspends well plus increases feel/hookups. Have to adj drag accordingly though. If need be I use a floro or mono leader in clearer water.

Another idea could be to play with suspends dots or heavier hooks.

Good luck.

not all jerkbaits work as advertised and water temperature is a factor as well due to density. mono floats so that is a factor. i would use fluoro - 8 to 10 lb. if they are still rising, try adding weight with subtle things like a snap, bigger hooks, bigger split rings, then dots etc. i've never had to go with the dots or anything drastic with lucky craft. pricey, but you get what you pay for.

A great bait this time of the year! Husky Jerks are fairly light and will rise to the surface. As stated, as the water gets colder they will stay down longer. I put a Suspend Strip between the hooks to help keep it down. Nothing like the thump from a bass when it is suspended Exclamation I always get my first bass of the year on a HJ Exclamation

Anybody like smith-wick rogues?

I understand you get what you pay for absolutely. But these suckers work pretty good sometimes.

I agree luckys the way to go depending on the jb i use a rapala knot seems to give it alot of action ,and use 8-10lb floro cant go wrong

One of the best jerkbaits made, Megabass Vision 110, is actually a very slow floater...floating is bad, barely floating, is deadly.

I like them. Its my jerk bait of choice when fishing from shore this time of year. Only being about 4 or 5 bucks if I hang one up I don't get too upset about it.

But, their hooks stink. Two times I had bass break the middle treble and only landed them because one of the other trebles got them. And sometimes you will get a dud that will just sink and not suspend out of the package. I also had this happen after I bashed one off a rock.

This is all part of you get what you pay for. I just stocked up on my favorite color of rogues which is the treadfin shad, for some reason the color pops in cold water.

rogues are an old standby. never used them but know people that do. i've never heard anything bad about them. another good thing about LCs or Megabass are the way they cast. you can chuck them pretty far without having to worry about backlash. b/c of the weight transfer systems.
