Crankin' For A Limit & Giant!!!

I started a solo trip of angling around 1:30pm as I left my launch on this raw day. About 5 minutes into the trip and I realized that I needed gloves, a hat and neck warmer as I intended to be out for a few hours. I made my way back to my house and stocked up on all the essentials before heading back out. There were snow flurries in the air as I made my way to the cove where Chuck and I had recently landed a few solid bass. After an hour of being blown around by the brisk wind and only one small bass to show I decided to troll a distance to some coves that could potentially have some cover from the wind. I was rotating between a jig, weighted worm and 4-6 foot running tiger colored crankbait.

It was slow until I found my grove around 3pm with the crankbait in 4-6 feet of water. Every 20-30 minutes I was picking off bass in the 1-2 lb range. I shifted every 10 minutes looking for something different that may hold a pig...a stump, a rock or a patch of old weeds. That stategy treating me well as I held the rod tip high in the air and slowly cranked the bait with random pauses in the wind. It was around 5:00 pm when I decided to head a little bit further into one of the coves...beaver cove to be specific. There are a few submerged logs to the right in about 4-5 feet of water so I chose to anchor up for my last few casts as the wind picked up yet again. I landed around my 5th cast in the area near a 15 foot long log and soon after my crank bait came to a hault! After setting the rod back and reeling in a couple cycles I realized I was on to a big fish as my medium action rod tip started to shake. I kept the pressure tight and saw the fat ass bass surface around 20 feet from the boat. I told myself to stay and composed and 15 seconds later it was net time!!!! I let out a monster whoooooo and to my surprise a guy named Chris witnessed the whole thing from his deck a few hundred feet away. I towed Larry Chris's shore and he snapped a few photo's to document the catch. The bass weighed in at 5lbs 13 ounces and was over 21 inches long with a nice gut! What a way to start the open water season! I'm absolutely stoked from cranking in 5 bass and a beast in these conditions. The Landlord and I will be back at it on the 7th so be warned of more slobs to come.
