Kayak Trip To The Nip

On saturday may 3rd, my friend and i took out the yaks for a day of fishing at the nip. i go to the nip a lot, but ive never been fishing all the way behind the island, so we headed out early to catch some fish. With Largemouth in mind, i started fishing the shore with a pumpkin senko. Once we got to our target area, behind the island, we fished the cover surrounding the areas along shore. we came across what i believe is a duck hunting strucure made out of concrete and docked the yaks to stretch out and do some shore fishing. fishing with a five inch senko, i was getting small bites off the structure, and once i hooked up, it was a huge crappie. we had found a massive school of crappie all pushing a pound. these fish were agressive enough to eat bass lures. we got around 3 each and headed out for bigger and better fish. fishing with rubber worms got old, so i switched to my rebel pop-r in light blue, by far the best color, cant be beat. Missed a few big hits, and caught a good pickerel. got another crappie on the top water too. on the way back to the ramp, i threw on a crankbait and trolled it, got another nice pickerel, but was unable to saftly take a picture due to big waves. SO FAR STILL NO LARGEMOUTH AT THE NIP!!!!!!

  • thanks guys...im goin saturday and hopefully going to get some bass

  • Spinnerbaits are a good bait for this time too! Keep throwing, you'll get em!

  • I second the jig recommendations. Crankbaits, live bait, and jigs are the way to go right now for bass.

I haven't replenished my rapalas and spinners in 2014 after decorating a few trees. But I've fished my lunch-time/ commute bass spots with plastics ~5x without a hit :(

Good job on the one-pound crappies. Those would make my day.

  • Jigs are the way to go, I'm pretty in-experienced myself with them, but it's the ONLY rig I've caught bass on so far this year (and all of them were pigs too!) Haven't even gotten a hit on my cranks and plastics.

  • @oldfisher-I don't use many bass jigs, but I'll definetly give them a try this weekend...it seems the bass aren't quite ready to bite yet for me

  • I am the number one fan of soft plastics but this time of year you got to try jigs. saturday I got 12 bass all on jigs, nothing else.

  • yeah thats true

  • atleast the other fish were biting
