Log Hog Time!!!

Headed out on Boone late afternoon from around 5:00pm to 6:30om despite the rain. It had been a while since I fished in the rain and with the calm winds and cloudy skies I felt pretty good as I made my way to a couple coves. I tied on a new snag proof frog since my last one had got mangled from previous bass attacks. It didn't take long to break it in on a nice 1 1/2 pound bass in the lily pads. I had the troller on slow gear and was peppering a cove about 100 feet from the shore. I saw a couple stumps in the water and thought to myself this must hold a good bass- it did but a few seconds after the strike I found myself just retrieving the lure. I continued to the next cove and landed a nice 2 pound bass in about 2 feet of water.

The rain picked up so I decided to turn around and re-fish the path I had previously taken in. Around 6:15pm I approached the log/stump area where I had lost the fish earlier. A nice long cast beyond the cover and I began my spiratic hop of a retrieve. I took my eyes off the lure for a few seconds to admire a prehistoric looking heron that took off from the shore. During that time I felt my frog get stuck, or at least I thought that was the case as I didn't hear a strike. I started to crank the line in and a couple seconds later I saw a serious bass jump near the log.....gametime!!! I continued to reel in hard as I didn't know if the hog was set but after it's third jump I realized the hook was in there good and solid. I kept the fish coming towards me and I honestly thought it was going to be my career bass! Finally it was under the boat and I netted the monster with my spare hand. She was a Hog, 5 pounds and 11 ounces, just under 22 inches and although it wasn't my career bass it was certainly one I won't forget as I thought I caught a log in the rain! I snapped a few photos and took a quick video which you should check out before setting it free. I think my parents named me incorrectly as this summer Frog Valpey would be more suitable.....haha! Much work and many Weddings in my future during the of this week, this lunker completed my fish fix.....at least for a little while!
