I know there are some people around here who work on reels, maybe they can tell me what I stripped in this thing.

Old Abu Garcia 5600 Black Maxx, has to be 16+ years old. Went to use it this morning with a Spro BBZ-1 Rat and on the first cast, reel would not retrieve, just free spools. Guide runs, but spool does not take up line. Maybe the engagement pawl or whatnot broke or is permanently engaged, but the spool is very tight and not loose like if you would have depressed the thumb bar.

I live in the North end of New Bedford, is this a shop somewhere??

Think the pinion gear where the spool shaft connects behind the sideplate under the reel is toast, as you crank the shaft the spool sits on doesn't move at all:

If you can't get it fixed locally, call Mike @ Delaware Valley Tackle in NY. He's done a lot of work for me, tuning and upgrading reels. He does good work, is reasonably priced, and turns his work around pretty quickly.

Mike offers Bassresource.com members discounts.

Good luck fixing your reel.
