I've been hearing around that Spot Pond and the Charles are good for smallies, but it seems that when I go there, all I catch are largemouth bass. I love catching largemouth, but I still haven't caught a smallmouth in Massachusetts. I'm just wondering where to go, and what lures to use, as I feel that the lures I use are also a factor in the species i'm catching.

your odds of catching smallmouth this time of the year is much better if you show up at day break. It is difficult to catch them during the day, especially bank fishing in clear water.

Dusk can work as well.spooks, tube lures and other soft plastic, mepps spinners anything that resembles a crayfish. They love crayfish. Good luck. Fall and spring best time for smallies. They like water that is cooler than large mouth like.

If you can get there, try the Merrimac River. Lots of smallies.
