Upper Spectacle Pond Description

This small, 72 acre pond, is situated about 1.5 miles west of Otis center. Maximum depth is 22 feet and average depth is approximately 11 feet. The bottom is composed of muck and clay. The transparency of thismountain pond is only 4 feet, which is probably due to tannic acid. Aquatic vegetation is moderate, but almost entirely confined to the shallow, northern end of the pond where some areas are too thick to fish in summer. The shoreline is completely wooded and undeveloped, and fully protected by state forest ownership. A gravel boat ramp, suitable for smaller, lightweight boats and trailers is located beside the outlet on the south end of the pond. The ramp is located off ColdtWebb Road, which runs south from Route 23 to a dead end in the state forest. The pond was most recently surveyed in 1981, at which time a total of five species were recorded present: chain pickerel, pumpkinseed, brown bullhead, white suckers and golden shiners.

At present, this beautiful, secluded pond is only lightly fished because of the lack of gamefish. While not overly abundant, the pickerel population is healthy and there are fair numbers of legal size individuals. Any small, flashy lure retrieved at moderate to high speed should provoke strikes and provide some action, but in general this pond will be enjoyed for its scenery and solitude, rather its limited fishing opportunities.
