First Lunch of the year

Had a nice day up oon the shores of Big Alum in Fiskdale Ma today.  Was after the excitement of fishing during some spring weather and hooking some stocked trout.  Because of the steady wind I had to switch to something a tad heavier on my fly rod so I went to a #8 nymph and a slow sink tippet.  After about 5 casts of getting it into the wind a whooping 10 feet, I let it sink nice and slow with very little pull and saw the line start to tighten so I gave it tug and hooked a nice 16" Brown trout.  Was all about the patience today

Lesson Learned

Fishing the pool on Farquarh with a hairs ear nymph and was having no luck.  I turned around with some 15 feet off line under me as well as standing in 3" of water I floated the nymph across the rapids and down the bank... WHACK.  I spent 3 minutes bringing in slack to have tension on the pole and the fish.  I then made a poor decision, I could have walked the fish down the river to the deeper water, or let him sit for a longer period of time, but I made the decision on bringing the fish up thru the deeper parts (6-14") of the rapids.  The brookie had to be 3-4# around 16-24" a fine specimen.  When I came behind him with the net, he shook hard left and snapped my 6x with ease.  7 minutes of stress no fish, I'm just glad Friendly's had buttercrunch that night.

Remember why i hate to explore

So my river expedition was nice, i did have a challenging moment, I approached a section of the river that dumped into two mini ponds from the old dams that use to be in the area.  Knowing that the pond behind the stream flow would be very silty and not to stable to stand in I decided to cross a little up from the dump in from the stream.  The first step was very solid and could feel the stone under it.  The next step took me up to my waiter top in silt and water.  It was a little nerve wrecking as I had to army crawl out of the river, and this s why I recommend fishing with a partner.

Starting to explore brooks

So my children have reached the age of no longer needing me 24/7 and this is the year that i am going to explore the small brooks around Sturbridge, I have modified my bike to hold my fly rod and tackle so today I am going to try Hamand Brook behind Sturbridge village.  My first trip to one of the ponds formed by the old farmer netted perch at a minimum of 12" and it took about ten minutes to fill a stringer, i'm hoping for brookie action up from the ponds.
