Smallmouth Spawn

First let me editorialize and say that it's bad enough that Webster charges so much to park in the dirt at their ramp....they have started charging early this year. That said...I ended up at Wallum Lake. There is a Smallmouth spawn finally started...58 degree water has got the males serious and very catchable. The females will be along soon. Start checking your lake for nests as the season of reproduction has begun. Please BE CAREFUL handling these fish. They are the future of your sport....The wife and I caught many male smallies up to 3lbs. Great fun....enjoy and don't forget that if you catch a giant that you can get a fiberglass mount....See you on the water....Grampa

First Day

Yesterday was my first trip ever, fishing a Connecticut lake. My choice was Pachaug Pond and I didn't have a topo map. What a treat, the day after a front went through, bluebird skies with a nice 20 mph wind. Things were a bit slow. We were there from 9am to 1pm. After finding where the wind wasn't blowing we managed to put a sunfish a pickerel and 2 largemouth bass into the boat. The fish we found were in backwater slews with at least 3 ft of water and good weed cover. They were on the bottom and had to be coaxed to bite with continuous jigging. Nobody fell in the water so it was a successful day. We'll talk again next time.....Grampa
