Deep Water Bassin'

Went out today to a medium sized Plymouth pond.  Post frontal and frontal conditions, northerly winds, light rain, cloudy. 75 degree water temp, similar air temp. After catching a smallie and a LM shallow early on a crankbait, the rest of my fish came deep. I caught my first LM 20' deep off a point and there seemed to be other fish with him, but I think they were moving, since I lost them.  I caught another one deep off a protected bay, and another one deep off a seemingly empty slow tapering bay.  I finally made my way over to the wind-swept shore line, and followed the bottom out to 20' deep.  I dropped a finesse bait, and not 10 seconds later my screen lit up with some bottom dwelling fish..Bass.  I proceeded to catch 6-8 LM over the next 45 minutes, all over 3 lbs, and two light 4's.  4lbs 3 oz biggest of the day.  It was fantastic fishing, I wish I didn't have to leave, as  I was on a big school of LM. Great day on the water.... Here is pic of one of them:

Nice school of LM hangin' out deep

Last couple outings

Went out last week to Stetson Pond 8/14/11, and had a decent morning with about 5 bass landed.  However, the highlight of the day came when my plastic craw gets BLASTED right below my kayak, and I see this monster pickerel come flying out of the water right next to me! I immediately loosened my drag as this thing needed to burn some serious energy before I had any chance of catching him...Even with the drag loosened, it still was sticking,... dam baitcaster... I ended up loosening it all the way to free spool and releasing the switch... At this point it was storming back and forth all over the place.  Meanwhile, I know I have 10# fluro tied on, so I take my time...Finally, I get him boat side while partially taking in line with my hand as my spool was too loose, and I couldn't get the drag tight...He is finally worn out after a good 2 minutes and I grab him near the gills (no net)...I thought my reel was broken at this point...Anway here it is:

 Big Angry Pickerel

The pic isn't great as it was Way Too long to fit in shot...No official weight as he made a sudden shake and jumped out of my hand as I was getting ready to get the scale..It was a good 2 feet long, biggest I have ever caught....Best fresh water fight I have had all summer...

This past Sunday, 8/21/11, hit a local pond right before sun up.  Bass are feeding right along some pads at this time, however the bite lasts maybe twenty minutes, and then completely shuts off...just like a switch... There are small bait fish breaking the surface and the bass are there stallking them.  If you see a boil its pretty much a guarantee hookup... Just got to hit it... These bass also don't leave the pads more than a few feet so you have to have decent aim most times...So when I get to my spot the bait fish are breaking and I proceed to catch 4 bass in the next 15 minutes, and lose a small one boat side. At this point it seems like you can't do any wrong, but I know it shuts off quick...I was using a fluke, however I have used tubes, top water poppers and buzz baits in the past: all were successful. The key is just being there at the right time and locating the bait fish and bass boils...Biggest of this small feeding frenzy was about 3 even:

About a 3# even

Few minutes later, shut off... Sun is now up a bit, and the bass are in hiding....Gotta go in and get them now...

Stetson Pond

Fished Stetson Pond in Pembroke from 5-8pm 8/9/11. Threatening rain, cloudy and humid, slight ripple in water, water temps in high 70's.  Started off bad, I had a big fish on off a shakey head, without a doubt a 4+lb LM, and my dam Fluro leader snapped at the knot when the bass saw my kayak and made a massive dive under the boat. Pissed about itYell...the reason why I don't like leaders... Let this spot sit for about a half hour... and then close to this spot but a bit deeper ending up cathing a nice 3lb.8oz LM on a small tube. Fought similar and felt similar to the one I lost, with the exception that this one flew out of the water and the first one didn't. (Thats why I think the first one was definitely over 4 pounds, or in that area at the very least.)  Also, I believe I caught this 3.8 LM over a week ago, and it was 3.6 last week, lol...Fished some tubes and shakey heads in deeper water (although I was pretty sure this wasn't the right pattern today), and then some weightless soft plastics over weeds to no avail...Got one more LM on the way in with a shallow running crankbait.

4 total bass caught, 2 total lost including a dink at the boat. Slow outing overall...

Best of the day

6/12-6/13/11

Fished for a few hours in the rain on Saturday 6/12/11 on the Indian Head River in Hanover from about noon to 3pm.  Wasn't expecting much with cold front/rainy conditions, but did fairly well in a down pour. Also hooked and lost at least 4 fish, maybe 5, which led to my worst hookup to land ratio in a long time. Landed 4 LM, 3 around 2#, one maybe a pound, so I missed every other fish at least, including one that, of course, would have been the best of the day. Had a nice hook set on her, felt like a brick, line takes off to the right and I know its a good one...I try to turn my rod tip to the left to steer her back to the boat and she's gone...Unbottoned...AH!!! The other couple I lost were smaller, so I wasn't too mad about it. Also had two blowups I missed on or the fish missed, or both of us, and one follow my lure out of the water which was another nice one that I didn't catch this day...

Fished for a couple hours again today 6/12 in Pembroke late morning during the front that moved in, the rain was down to a drizzle, and the winds steadily picked up out of the north east. SLOW day, got two small LM's in the boat, not really pic worthy, and one nice 2.5-3# on a mop head jig break off as I raised it into my kayak. My line snapped at the knot, I must have tied a bad knot in the wind while I was rushing or there was a fray, since I had 14# Fluro on, and the fish wasn't huge, but a nice little fatty. Dam!!! There goes my mop head jig in her mouth to boot!! I would have gladly of taken it out for her...Tie another one on and of course fish for her for a few minutes to no avail... then proceed to hang up my second mop head jig under a dock. Of course ,this knot was like handcuffs as I couldn't even break my line after 2 minutes of trying and fighting the wind. Finally, the line gave and the second jig was gone..Dam. Two in 20 minutes... Some days are better than others, but still great to be out there fighting the elements.
