Quabbin Special Olympics Fishing Derby

This past weekend a Special Olympics fishing derby was held at Gate 8 in Belchertown, MA.

Many Volunteers and Sponsors gave their time and money to help some very special athletes enjoy a weekend of fishing. Some of these athletes had never fished before. To catch fish was very exciting for them.

You can read more about this here

If you are a Quabbin fisherman or woman and would like to know how you can participate in Special Olympics check out the Mass. Special Olympics page.

I urge you to think about volunteering in this special event...I promise you will get back way more than you give.

Support The People Who Work For You

I found this article and I thought It might be of interest to the fishing community here in MA Fish Finder.

Senator Scott Brown is fighting for the fishermen and giving a big 'thumbs-down' to the NOAA. I feel it's important to keep tabs on my politicians who help the sportsmen and women and give them my support come election time.

Read the Article Here

Very interesting read.

Professor Higbee's Lake and Stream Maps

The first “Stream and Lake Map” was completed in 1965 after a 30 year effort by Howard Higbee, a former Penn State Professor.

Professor Higbee succeeded in creating a map of the highest detail possible…a map that shows every stream and lake. He painstakingly plotted by hand, the location of 45,000 miles of streams onto a 3-by-5-foot map.

The map sold extremely well—until it was lost several years later. Incredibly, the printer entrusted with the original drawing and printing plates declared bankruptcy, then carelessly hauled Higbee’s 30 years of work to the landfill.

The few remaining dog-eared copies became a prized fisherman’s possession. Professor Higbee was offered $400 for one of his last maps. And state agencies were forced to keep their copies under lock and key.

The experts had always told Professor Higbee that reprints were impossible, because the maps were printed in non-photographic blue.

Then, in 1991, at the age of 91, Howard Higbee’s dream came true. Computers made it possible to reprint the map. Holding an updated map, Howard said, “I never thought I’d live to see this day.”

Then, by combining Professor Higbee’s knowledge with computer technology—new Stream and Lake Maps were created.

Good Day On Quabbin

If you live in Mass. you know what the weather has been. The rain and wind has dampened many fishing plans, but we finally caught a break in the weather and made it on the Quabbin. Had a great day of fishing.

We boated 21 Lake Trout. Hit into them right away, although the first few were small, they got much bigger as the day wore on. The action was steady and to make the day interesting we had a little competition between the left side and right side of the boat. Final Score Left 10 - Right 11. We even had doubles!

We worked the downriggers in 70-90 foot of water, using Dave Davis and shiners.

We weren't the only ones enjoying great fishing. We saw many others reeling in Salmon and Bass. It seems the Salmon are holding in 30-40 foot of water and the Bass are on the bed.
