Operation Neptune- Marblehead MA

I had the pleasure of joining my buddy Sven- a retired Marine for an outing that was put together by the Wounded Warrior Program. It's a day for injured veterans to enjoy and get a dose of much deserved recognition and appreciation. He was able to bring a guest to the event and invited me to go along. I picked him up at 5:30am yesterday and we headed out.

The event was a deep sea morning trip at the Boston Yacht Club followed by lunch and some speeches and raffles. We were greeted by our volunteer/guide at 7:00am when we arrived to the club. He was ecstatic when he found out that both of us enjoyed fishing and assured us that he would put us on some good Stripers. Felix was his name and he lives in Marblehead and actually grew up there too- he knew every nook and cranny on the coast we fished. Our Captain for the day was Dave, he was a retired Veteran and currently is a lobsterman...what a solid guy!

Felix delivered as promised....we arrived at our first hole around 7:30am and it only took 5 minutes for me to hook up with my 1st of 4 Stripers on the day. My buddy Sven followed up with his first about 5 minutes later...what a start to the day. By 8:30 am we had boated 8 Stripers ranging between 30-36 inches. We took a voyage to an island a mile offshore to stock up on mackerel, which was our bait of choice. We caught about 8 of them and headed to another rock ledge where we trolled and ended up catching a couple more there. I lost one that literally snapped the barb off the 6/0 circle hook that the bait was on.........ohh well, I guess that's why the big ones usually get away.

We landed back on shore around noon where Felix cleaned 2 fish that we kept. As I'm watching him fillet the fish he tells me to grap the line attached to the dock and bring it up. It was one of his lobster traps...there was one keeper in it, I grabbed another line as instructed and there was another keeper lobster in there. He then had me grab a line for his secret keeper stash and gave us two more to enjoy later on that night.....what a guy!

We exchanged info after lunch and plan to meet up with him and Captain Dave in the future. It was an unbelievable day and I'm glad my buddy Sven enjoyed it! I'm not much of a saltwater angler but I gotta admit....bringing in Stripers on 20lb mono spinning gear is absolutely awesome!!!!!
