lures... explanation?

I'm new to freshwater fishing, I've been saltwater fishing for years, and always used a honkin big hook, a chunk of fish or a seaworm and went fishing. Now i'm into freshwater since my son likes fishing (freshwater easier for a 4 year old). anyway, see my avatar



what kind of lure is that? Is there a place that can explain the basics of lures, including what's best for certain species? I bought a few cheapos ($1.50 each) just to fill my tackle box.

Bass Pro Shops can be good if you can find someone who knows what there talking about.

Rapala.com has a good description of there lures and some video demo's

Local tackle shops are also very good for local info.

When first starting out you may want to get some night crawlers for your son and maybe some shiners for yourself. This way your son has a better chance of catching fish which will keep him interested. As far a lures are concerned I would start simple. Get some rubber worms probably 7inch to start. Black, red shad, motor oil are good colors to start with. Rig them Texas style which basically means weedlees. Any bait and tackle store can set you stait as far as proper hookes and rigging as Meat said.

Yeah, my son is either on worms or just shiney hooks which stupid sunfish love.

I'll check out some of these resources, i need to find a local fish shop!

Yes yes, I had to get him started, otherwise I wouldn't be able to fish as regularly as I am now! As long as he's with me, wifey doesn't care how often I fish
