Lake Maspenock
10/25/2010

Napa called me today at work and notified me of the numerous October Slobs that were posted on MAFF over the last weekend. I couldn't wait to get home to take a look at the most recents lunkers shared on the site!! Roger, Mark and Chuck stole the show, Absolute beasts and a true Monster! This motivated me to spend a few hours on foot doing some night time angling after I got back from work. Since the water level has dropped over 3ft at Maspy it makes it difficult to get out there in a boat, especially at night so I decided to put on some boots and angle the shore line. I caught numerous bass on the jitterbug and one on a popper. In between I was throwing the frog out there and got a couple serious splashes/misses throughout the trip.

I got back near my house and continued to use the frog. A while went by and I tossed it about 30 ft off shore towards a couple rocks that were exposed from the water. I hopped it back slowly and in roughly 1 foot of water, 15 ft from the shore I felt and heard a monster strike. I stayed still for a couple seconds and then reeled in with a pull up high and felt a strong fish on the end. Since it was close to the shore it was an abrupt fight with splashes that signified a good fish and most of the stress hit while I was pulling it in the last 10 ft in only a few inches of water. I got my hands on the beauty and knew immediately that it was a catch to be proud of. She was just about 20 inches and weighed 5 pounds 2 ounces. The gut was impressive and made for a great/unexpected catch. The hope is high that the Fall Frenzy has hit and more big bass should be landed soon. Thanks for the Fall PIG!

Blue Balls Lagoon Lunker

8/31/2010

So I headed out on this hot summer day around 4:00 pm since I got out of work a little earlier than expected. I hit Maspy Solo style looking to continue a streak of consecutive months with 5 plus pounders. I started on the side of the lake with the deepest water for the first hour and caught nothing but a mild sun burn. I moved my way past the beach to some curly weeds in the water and caught 3 bass on a weighted tube during the next half hour- nothing over a pound and half but I was happy to get some action..

I decided to go into what I call Blue Balls Lagoon because it has always looked like Larryville but I have yet to catch anything other than big pickeral in there...... that was all about to change. The area was on the recieving end of a large fallen tree, plenty of shade and about 100 feet in diameter- this perfect circle of a cove looked ideal to hold a monster on this hot day and every day for that matter. My first cast I got stuck on a branch and had to take the canoe into the middle to get free. About 6 casts go by without any activity. I threw a cast in the shallows and got a solid strike but couldn't land the fish. I fished this small area for another 10 minutes without another strike until I landed.....a log! I was stuck on the tree structure and cut the line with agitation. I swiveled up another rubber worm wacky style and stayed in the cove with persistance. I pitched my worm about 25 feet from the boat and let it "soak" as Chuck (the Landlord) would say. Finally I felt a substantial twitch in my line and then set the fish, gametime! I was standing up in the canoe watching my line dart to the right, I knew it was a great fish but had plenty of work left to get it in the boat. The fish was now on the bottom about 8 feet below the surface as I felt it and my line hitting structure on the bottom. I fought the fish firmly to bring it near the surface and realized it was BIG! In the process my line snagged a tree branch on the bottom so now I had to lift both the fish and branch to the boat. I saw the beast and without hesitation netted it with my free hand. Two kids chugging beers witnessed the whole thing and when they saw the fish shared some words that I can't post- haha! I slowly took the fish back home to document my catch with photo's and took measurements. Just over 22 inches long and weighed in at 5 pounds 12 ounces. An extremely rewarding catch as I was thrilled to finish out August with a Lunker and to continue the streak. I'm glad I don't have Blue Balls in that Lagoon anymore!

Jen and I set sail around 3:00 pm on Monday afternoon for a little tour of Maspy. We were in the Old Town Canoe with the troller heading down to the farside of the lake- a place I rarely go due to the distance needed to travel. We were enjoying the beautiful afternoon, throwing an occasional cast in new terrain that looked intriguing- no action through about 30 casts. We are on our way back and it's about 4:15pm in the afternoon when I spot a newly fallen tree in deep water (15-20ft). Jen had to be back on the shores by 4:45pm to head out and teach yoga but we decided to stop and give it 10 minutes. Well.... it ended up being 12 due to the beast Jen locked up with on the end of the fallen tree.

Jen is a humble Angler in comparison to me so I was shocked when she arrogantly said, "check out that cast, it's right where I want it" I see her senko land a few feet from the fallen tree and say "nice angle". About 10 seconds later I witness her set the hook like a Pro and start fighting what evers on the end of the rod. After about 15 seconds I see the line dart right and her drag start to run- the rod is majorily bent and I know it could be a special catch. Jen starts cranking the reel, hand over hand to keep the tension on the fish. We see a true lunker surface the water about 15 feet from the boat- Holy $H!T is all that came to mind. The fight continued for a while and finally the fish was near the boat- it gave one more run of desperation before the beast was netted. We took a bunch of pictures and weighed it - 6 pounds and 1 ounce and was 20 inches long. Welcome to the 6 Pound Club! What a fish and fight- one of the best angling moments of my career and tops for Jen. She caught a lunker last August but this is how you upgrade! Way to go Jen!!!

What an action packed night!!! I had a jam packed day and enjoyed all of it! That feeling continued through out the evening! I set sail around 7:15 pm and saw none other than Riderer. I rollled up in the old town canoe and he was in his khyak-blue thunder! Shortly after the encounter we heard a giant splash in the water. I threw a senko worm a few feet past the ripples and watched my line for a few seconds- then the excitement hit as my line started to dart. I set the hook and the reel in process begain. The fish surfaced a couple times and then darted by my canoe, a great sighting. I worked the fish in and then netted it; what a way to start the trip, third cast in and a slob landed! Ralph took a quick video after the catch which can be viewed at http://www.bikemovies.com/movie/013256/

Two of my next five casts landed a smallie and a largie. I decided to spend an hour in a secluded cove with shallow waters, a massive lily pad presence and stumps that Larry rents out during peak season. Prior to arriving in the cove I hit about a 1 pound bass. Ralph was hitting bass as well- probably 5 in total on the trip with a couple in the 2 pound range and some solid fights. He also landed a solid pickeral that needed a visit to the dentist haha. Overall I was impressed with Ralph's arrogance and khyak techniques. I continued using the worm for a few casts and caught a nice bass in between the pads. A few minutes later I went further into the cover and with a frog got an exciting jump and finally a set with a frog. I worked the bass in through the weeds and pads before I netted the 2 pound 10 ounce largie- a very rewarding grab. A nice 20 inch pickerel followed quickly as it smashed my worm near a rock during the retrieve. The last bass of the night hit on a jitterbug around 9:30 pm. An active and rewarding trip on a memorable day with once again ARROGANCE prevailing.

I just got back from another Thursday night softball game, a nice victory. I wasn't planning on fishing tonight due to weather.com showing that we would have 10-12 mph winds. When I got home I looked out and realized it was almost glass so I decided to head out on Maspy for a bit. I started with a Jitterbug and I was hitless through 15 minutes near the Bermuda Triangle. It's about 10:45 roughly 20 minutes into the trip when I started to get action. Within about 6 casts I caught 2 largemouth bass and a sunfish. The wind started to pick up a bit and I found myself drifting. I continued to cast and landed a nice 3 pound bass- solid fight.

The wind picked up again and I realized the jitterbug wasn't making as loud as a retrieve it normally causes so I decided to switch to a 7 inch swimbait to see if I could find a monster and I had a lot of luck on big swimbaits last year. About 5 casts into the lure change I get a major strike. The fish smashed it off the surface and took my line for a ride. It took about 40 seconds to bring the fish in and then it started taking 5-10 feet of drag at a time. At this point I knew it was freak of a bass and continued to keep pressure on the fish while not being greedy. A few more seconds go by before the tug of war ceases and I netted the beauty. Hell yeah!!! I was solo angling so I took the fish home for a photo shoot- 6 pounds even and 21 inches long. The ironic part of the night is the fact we got our new softball jersey's and I was able to showcase it on this trip. Thanks for the early Birthday present!

I looked out at the lake after I returned from my softball game and couldn't resist the urge to search for Larry. I set out at 11:00 pm on an absolute glass surfaced Lake Maspenock with zero wind. I had a special feeling about the night- the date 6/3 stuck in my head while I was paddling to a spot I had in my mind. I arrived to my destination about a quarter of a mile from shore in 8-10 feet of water with a rock shelf and weeds below me- Game time! Three of my first four casts connected with bass in the 1-1 ½ lb range. It felt like a dream, the fish were going crazy. I almost knew at this point that it would be a time to remember. About five casts later I landed my first Larry- she weighed 5 lbs 6 ozs and gave an incredible fight. The Pig hit my jitterbug the second it hit the water and took me about 30 seconds to bring it in but once I got it to the boat the fish went straight down before propelling itself in the air- Holy S***, the excitement set in. I netted the beast and brought her back to the shore to have one of my roomates take a few photos before I released it. While shaking my veins filled with joy I realized tonight was truly a special night, probably the best night to fish of the whole year.

It's now 11:32 pm and I head back out to the same area. My first cast I landed another solid fish but a few seconds into the battle it shook the hook free. I fished for another 40 minutes and caught 4 more bass between 1-2 lbs with plenty of missed jitter hits in between. Literally every other cast got the attention of a bass in some way or another. I was about to head in when I decided to paddle a football field's distance to a marker in the water on the outskirts of the area I had just peppered. My first cast in the area landed 10 feet from the markers..... blup blup, blup blup and then SMASH- The true Monster of the night came out to play. This fish surfaced a half dozen times before I reeled it in close to the boat. As it approached the boat it went straight down, taking my drag to under the boat to the other side of the canoe before I hear and see it jump through the water (I'm nervous as you know what that it was going to get off) but patiently worked it back under the boat and netted the beast. I tied it up as my hands trembled to secure the fish as I breathed a sigh of relief and let a WHOOOOOOOO out that woke up half the residents in Hopkinton. I got on shore and had another roomate take plenty of photos and weighed the fish- 6lbs 1 oz and was 21 ½ inches long. I let the fish go and it was about 1:00 am at this point. The night of solo angling resulted in 2 slobs, over 20 lbs of fish and one happy Valpey! I enjoyed a victory coors light on the deck looking at the lake as I thought to myself...what a night!

I had plans to go to the Vineyard from Friday to Sunday with my girlfriend so I knew I had to get my fish fix on the night before. I started the trip arounf 6:30 pm and fished solo on Maspenock in the Old Town Canoe. The weather was great- sunny with minimal wind. I worked some rubber worms for the first hour and caught a couple one pound bass. I decided to move to one of my favorite coves for a little while. I switched to a new rapala swimmer that I had just purchased and caught a solid 21 inch pickerel with a nice belly- just under 3 pounds. I couldn't document any of these catches because for the last week I haven't been able to locate the digital camera (I guess thats why you don't drink and fish). I was pretty content at this point and decided to head to the shores to back for my upcoming trip or at least I thought that was the plan.

I land on shore around 8:00 and I'm unpacking my gear when a fellow boater decides to be sociable and starts a conversation. He lives on Maspenock too and was interested in if I had any luck. During the conversation he almost bottomed out his friends bass boat even though I had previosuly warned him of the rocks that existed near my shore. I decide to throw some casts while we chat. He runs some local tourneys so I was interested in what he had to say. About 5 minutes later I feel a steady pull on my line, I wait a few seconds and give a solid tug. I can see some weeds on the top of my line but still felt something else on the end of my line. The conversation ceases and I start to give a steady reel. I didn't think it was anything substantial until it was half way to the shore and then the fight began. The monster didn't surface but instead heads dead right. About 15 seconds later I finally see the beast on the end of my braid- Holy **** I shriek as I new it was Wall Worthy! I didn't have a net so when it got close enough to the wall I jumped in the water and luckily was able to grab the Pig by it's mouth. I take it on shore and the WHOOOOOOO's began! I needed pictures so JB was kind enough to pick up a digital camera and brought it to the house while I kept the fish hostage in a cooler. A few swigs of the Captain was in order, and then a few more! We snapped plenty of photos and then sent the Lake Monster on it's way! Thanks JB, much appreciated. Yeah- I think I got my fish fix on!!!!!!

Lake Waukewan, NH
So I head back to Lake Waukewan in NH with my girlfriend Jen to spend some time with my family for the weekend. The trip was more focused on having fun during watersports, eating great food, sipping on sweet tasting beverages and just relaxing with the best company anyone could ask for. A few days prior, Napa and I tore up the lake and tattooed the area with arrogant angling as previously cited on the 1st Waukewan Trip.

It's about 2:00 pm on Saturday, August 22nd when Jen and I decide to take out the 10 horsepower boat for a tour of the lake. The trip is meant to be more scenic than anything as she has not yet seen the true beauty that the lake offers. We decide to take my fishing pole, with no tackle box or gear, but just a yamamotto that is attached to the steel leader on my rod. My Dad witnessed the departure from the dock, and cockily yells, "Jeff, you need the big net" with a chuckle. Not sure if he's referring to fishing or something else, I decide better and respond, " No Dad, just going to cruise around the lake for a bit". We ship ahoy not sure if the motor is propelling us through the waters or the hair on my head acting as a sail as it captures the humid breeze from the lake.

About 20 minutes into the tour we spot a giant log with 3 ducks (perhaps mother goose) and a family of turtles chillin peacefully on it. I fire about 4 casts around the log, apparently I'm still wearing repellant as nothing strikes. We make our way a couple football fields deeper into the the cove in about 8 feet of weedy waters, roughly a hundred feet from some lily pads when Jen decides to toss a couple casts. The first two didn't bring any action but I was thrilled that she wanted to angle. On her third cast she fired it about 25 feet from the boat and I ask her, " Jen do you mind if I take a picture of you babe?" She replies, "sure" but prior to me snapping the photo she yells "fish on!" Amazed at the fact we found action during the middle of the day with 90 degree temperatures I alter my attention to the reel in process. I was in shock as I see a slob leap out of the water roughly 20 feet from the boat. "Holy S***" my voice shreeks as I hear and see the drag from the reel go buck wild. About 30 seconds goes by with Jen angling the dickens out of this monster when it approaches the boat (I think back to my Dad's prior comments about the net and say to myself... what a SOB!) The fish gets close enough to the boat for me to basically bear hug it before getting her in the boat. Jen caught Larry; a true monster that will go on the wall of slobs. Whooooo! The pure joy and high that came over us was priceless as Jen let's loose an, "I caught Larry!" You sure did hunny! It proves that you never know when Larthaniel will strike so be ready and make sure you get it in the boat. Way to go Jen- You ROCK!

I'm leaving for NH with my girlfriend in a couple hours but I decided to go out on the Lake Maspenock solo for about an hour and a half. I paddled out at 8:30 am and headed towards a giant rock in about 10 feet of weedy waters. The air is quite humid with a little breeze and cloud cover...pretty solid conditions for some morning fishing. About my fifth cast in I struck a monster bass on a Yamamotto, the fight was over a minute as it begins to approach the boat. I keep my pole low trying to attempt to keep the fish from jumping. My drag started to dart and then the beast showed itself in desperation as it leaped into the air and shook the hook free about 10 feet from my boat. Absolutely in shock that yet another Lawrence eluded me. I'm not saying it was a 6 pounder but fair to say a solid 4 and change. I expressed my frustration to myself with some colorful languauge that does not need to be shared!

I re-grouped and thought to myself A) at least I got to expereince the great fight and B) I just got out on the lake and most people are working. I proceeded to pepper the area with green Yamamotto worms when I landed a solid 2lb 11 oz bass. I stayed at that spot and caught 3 more large mouth bass, all around a pound. I decided to shift about 500 yards to deeper waters roughly 16 feet deep with a weedy bottom. I switched lures to a big squid lure and found great success. I caught 2 large mouth bass on back to back casts, with the biggest being 1lb 9 oz, not too shabby. I finally felt satisfied, especially after the one that got a way. On the way back a tossed a couple casts at some docks in shallower waters with a crawfish rubber, but no one came out to play. I got back on the shore around 10:00 am, and I am now packing up to head back to Lake Waukewan in NH to conclude my vacation. I'll probably fish for a couple hours one night and one morning so I'm hopeful to report back with Larry.

Lake Waukewan, NH
8/15/2009 - 8/18/2009

Get ready for a roller coaster of a Fishing Trip- Valpey & Napa Tagteam. There will be various trips lumped into this depiction of a 3 day fishing excursion in NH, where the MA Angler's showed the lake what true Fisherman are capable of!

BONUS TIME: Napa and I arrive on the lake a day earlier than expected around 4:00 pm on August 15th. We head to a cove about a mile from the house and waste no time to catch some fish. I casted towards a dock surrounded by lily pads with a rubber worm and landed a fiesty 1.5lb large mouth bass. This was Napa's first experience fishing at this absolutely beautiful Lake. The water is velvet and the fish are the healthiest I've ever seen. About an hour later we go to deeper waters about 15ft deep, where a fallen log has found it's new home. The log not only occupied the waters as Napa quickly found out as he snipped a 3lb, 17 inch small mouth bass. A monster and fight that took him a couple minutes to wear down the beast before I could get him in the boat. What a start to the trip and bonus time was capitalized.

MORNING BITE: The next morning we woke up at 5:30 am, interesting enough I woke up on a spider covered floor instead of the King Size bed that resided 5 feet from me. We are both extremely grogy so we hit a local Mickey D's to fuel up before the trip. I ask the woman at the window for the weather report and she replies, "It's going to be beautiful, 100 degrees, extremely humid with no breeze" Interesting prospective on the weather yet I was unfazed as I knew I would be on the water. We get in a 10 horse power fishing boat at 6:30 am and make our way to Mosquito Cove 2 miles across the lake. We roll up to a glass covered surface, about 5 feet of weedy water with Aunt Lily all around us. There is a solo-fisherman, most likely from P-Town. We ask if he has had any luck and he replies "Yeah I just caught a bass, about the size of (proceeds to basically stand up in his canoe and motions to unzip his fly, before realizing better and says) my paddle." Okay buddy calm down we tell him. Napa wastes no time and catches a true Larry of a Large mouth bass, 4 lbs and 18 inches. A tremendous fight as it desperately darted into the weeds during the reel in. About 20 minutes later I caught 2 large mouth bass, nothing to right home about. We then encounter the second character of the morning a woman khayaker that is laughing histerically and is pretty much wearing an "I smoke crack" t-shirt. We gave her a little air-time before we booked it out of there. Morning bite success.

LATE NIGHT JITTERING- This is still the 16th of August around 8:30 at night when Napa and I feel the urge to go due some jitterbugging in the Cove we went to the first day. We were at a Harley Bar before taking yager bombs to get us amped up. Were floating in between some Doc's when Larry decides to come out and play. Again Napa was on the recieving end when this Slob smashed his bug about 15 feet from the boat and put on a high jump clinic before I scooped him in the net. The beast was 17 inches and weighed close to 4 lbs. Not much action the rest of the night which surprised me as I usually catch 3-5 bass on any given night there. The lake was glass and the sky so clear, yet dark due to no moon....appparently a time of the year that is called "Blue Moon" I'm usually used to sipping back on Blue Moons but pretty cool to experience.

LAST HOPE LARRY: August 18th at 7:00 am and I realize that I haven't caught a substantial fish. We set out in the fishing boat, again great weather and fishing conditions. We go to the other side of the cove where we can spot fish. Prior to casting another Khayker going faster in his boat than I am in basically a racing boat approaches us. I ask "have you seen the loons in this cove?" Not sure why I asked as he was wearing a Loon feather hat and scuba gear to go loon sight seeing. A pretty cool old-timer to shoot the s*** with. I warned him of our angling skills so he wisely jumped in the water on the other side of the cove. Napa is using a squid lure and got the first pickeral of the trip, a solid one at that as it was 17 inches long. We leave to go about a mile back towards the house to a cute little cove tucked into the corner of the lake. As we paddle in we see the Larry Family, two lunkers with about 100 baby bass following close behind. My estimation was about 5 pounds and beautiful looking fish. We immediately start fishing hoping to land Mommy or Daddy. I threw a cast with a Yamamoto in about 2 feet of water at a dock with tree cover. My line starts to run wildly from side to side so I knew I struck a solid pickeral. I got the fish to the boat and Napa net's the SOB- Whooooo! It wasn't a Larry of a bass but I didn't give a s*** as the 19 inch monster was the best fish I caught during the NH tour. I'll take Mr. Picky anyday! That concludes one of the most legendary vacation/fishing excursion's I've ever been on.

We went to NH and angled, resulting in the conquering of Lake Waukewan!

I didn't have to work until noon, so I woke up after an exhilirating evening and decided to try a new cove with deep waters. My second cast I landed a pickeral on a diver squid lure. About an hour went by without any other action so I decided to call it until the evening, as I have a trip planned with none other than NAPA who is freshly geared up! To my surprise on the way back I decide to troll a Yamamoto behind the boat and about 2 minutes later I landed a 2 and half pound large mouth bass- what I consider a bonus catch. If you don't have anything in the water....you're not going to get a fish- go figure. That was the prequel to the days events. Once i get this damn suit off in about an hour, it's round two for late night Larry Hunting. Whooooo!

So, I'm a man of word. As indicated in the morning trip, I forshadowed an evening outing on Maspencok with Napa (King Smallie). We set out at about 9:00 pm on an absolute glass covered surface, idea for my favorite fishing- top surface time. We started slow with an abundance of small jumps but nothing in the boat. This was in deep waters in a secluded cove. It's now about 10:30 pm and we are paddling to the next destination when I see what looks like Larry Central on the outskirts of an Island. I tell Napa to fire a cast towads the shore, he angles a few casts with no success. We drifted about 50 feet when the magic happens. Napa throws a cast about 20 feet from the shore (100 feet from a raging party of middle-aged party animals. I was buzzed from the aroma in the air....actually probably buzzed from the yager and beers I was consuming...okay fish time). I hear a loud splash, a miss on Napa's jitterbug, he stays focused and pulls the lure a few feet towards the boat when Mayhem strikes. I witness a fish about 25 feet from the boat jump 4 - 6 times, making Jordan in his prime look like Yokozuma. I request the net and Napa somehow manages to assisit me while getting the beast to the boat. I scoop and miss realizing the quality of the fish, second time was the charm as I see the Smallie of the Year emerge in the boat and congratulate my angling partner on his Larry of a catch and Wall Status. She weighed in at 3 lbs 9 ounces and was 20 inches long- WOW! One of the happiest moments in my fishing career- a natural high came over me and we started celebrating with Soco shooters.

I managed to pull in a decent smallie of my own and then a large mouth around midnight. What a night...and looking forward to many more. That night will be remembered or at least most of it- haha! Your on the wall of Slobs NAPA!
